The species we most frequently encounter are common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. Both are resident in Algarve waters, although their movements shift depending on food availability and ocean conditions.

Spring (March–May): Calm Seas and Active Dolphins
Spring is one of our favourite times on the water. After the winter swells settle, sea conditions often become calmer and more predictable. Visibility improves, and boat traffic is still relatively low compared to peak summer.
This is a strong season for dolphin sightings. As water temperatures begin to rise, fish populations increase, drawing dolphins closer to shore. It’s not unusual to see playful groups swimming alongside the boat.

Summer (June–September): Peak Season for Dolphin Watching
Summer is the most popular time to visit Faro, and it’s also a fantastic time for dolphin tours. The Atlantic is generally calmer, mornings are bright and clear, and trips are less likely to be affected by weather.
Dolphins are active throughout the summer months. Food availability offshore continues to attract pods, and longer daylight hours give us more flexibility in planning departures.
That said, summer is busy. Tours often fill up quickly, particularly in July and August. If you’re travelling during this period, we recommend booking your Dolphin Tours in the Algarve in advance to secure your preferred date.

Autumn (October–November): A Hidden Gem

The sea retains warmth from the summer, and fish remain abundant. Dolphin activity continues, and there are fewer boats on the water. Light conditions can be beautiful at this time of year, especially on clear October mornings.
Weather can be slightly less predictable than in summer, and occasional Atlantic swells may reschedule a departure for safety reasons. However, when conditions are right, autumn tours can be exceptional.

Winter (December–February): Wild and Dramatic
Winter in Faro is quieter and more atmospheric. The Atlantic can be more powerful, with stronger swells and occasional storms rolling in from the west. For this reason, tours are more weather-dependent during these months.
However, dolphins do not disappear in winter. In fact, we often encounter active pods offshore when sea conditions allow us to head out. With fewer vessels around, sightings can feel especially intimate and undisturbed.
For travellers who value flexibility and don’t mind adjusting plans around the weather, winter can still offer memorable encounters.
When is the Best Time of Day to See Dolphins in Faro?
Dolphins can be active at any time, but morning tours often benefit from calmer seas. Wind typically increases in the afternoon, especially during summer, which can create choppier conditions offshore. Calmer water makes it easier to spot dorsal fins at a distance and improves overall comfort during the ride. For this reason, early departures are often ideal! Light also plays a role. Clear morning light can enhance visibility on the water, making it easier for our crew to identify movement in the distance.
