When Is the Best Time to Take a Boat Tour in Faro?

There’s no bad time to get out on the water in Faro. Home to the spectacular Ria Formosa, it’s a year-round destination offering myriad sights and attractions for travellers. The Ria Formosa is an ever-changing lagoon system, as tides rise and fall, birds swoop in and out, and dolphins make their appearance along the coastline.

The “best” time to take a boat tour in Faro really comes down to what you want from the experience, whether that’s swimming and sunshine, wildlife spotting, or fewer crowds. Here at Formosamar, we run Faro Boat Trips to Ria Formosa in every season. We’ve created this guide to what you can expect each season, from weather to wildlife and crowd levels. Keep reading for our local insights and tips!

Spring in Faro (March – May): Birdlife & Comfortable Cruising

Spring is one of the loveliest times to explore the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Temperatures are mild (usually 18–24°C), the lagoon feels fresh and green after winter rains, and birdlife is abundant. Migratory species pass through the wetlands, making it a brilliant season for nature lovers and photographers. So if spotting flamingos, spoonbills, and other lagoon residents appeals to you, take a look at our Ria Formosa Bird Watching Boat Tour

Crowds at this time are as moderate as the temperature, so you’ll enjoy a perfectly leisurely and relaxed day on the water. Mid-morning or late afternoon is best, when the light is soft and wildlife is active.

Summer in Faro (June – September): Island Hopping & Dolphin Watching

Summer is when Faro is at its brightest. Long days, warm temperatures (25–30°C), and golden sunshine make this the season for swimming, island hopping, and relaxed afternoons by the water. Ria Formosa’s islands truly come alive, with cafés bustling and beaches at their best. If you’re planning an island-focused trip, you can preview what awaits with our Guide to Island Hopping Ria Formosa

Summer is also the most reliable time of year for heading out to sea to look for dolphins! Calmer conditions and stable weather mean dolphins are more active, and you’ll have a much higher chance of spotting them during one of our Dolphin Watching Boat Trips from Faro. Try booking an early morning slot for primetime viewing!

The downside of the summer months is the crowds. This is when Faro is at its busiest, and so it’s essential to book your tours in advance. If you’d prefer a greater degree of intimacy, you can always book one of our Private Boat Charters in the Algarve for just you and your group.

Autumn in Faro (October – November): Warm Water, Softer Light & Fewer Visitors

Autumn is something of a hidden gem. The sea is still warm from summer, daytime temperatures hover between 19–26°C, and the pace slows noticeably. You’ll find more space on the islands and a quieter rhythm in the lagoons.

It’s a beautiful time for unhurried cruising, photography, and enjoying the shifting golden tones of the marshland. Wildlife remains active, with migratory birds returning and flamingos starting to gather in impressive numbers. Crowds start to gradually drop off, and with the beautiful late afternoon light, you may want to take a Sunset Boat Trip in Faro!

Winter in Faro (December – February): Peaceful Lagoon & Birdwatching Highlights

Winter in Faro is mild compared to much of Europe, with daytime temperatures around 15–18°C and occasional rain. While swimming may not be the main activity, the lagoon is calm and peaceful. This is one of the best seasons for birdwatching, with flamingos and wading birds easy to spot in the shallows. For an idea of what you may see, read our Birdwatching Guide to Ria Formosa!

Crowds are at their lowest, so you’ll experience the lagoon during one of its most beautiful and tranquil periods. It’s a great way to enjoy a more reflective journey and admire nature without the bustle.
