Our walk starts from this fisherman's village which has lovely views to the Islands of Tavira and Cabanas. Along this guided walk you will learn about the process of salt extraction.

Renowned for its excellent quality, the saltpans of the Algarve are centuries-old environments built by man where salt is extracted in a traditional and sustainable way.

We walk along these complex and discover that areas like this are responsible for an important share of salt production in Portugal. There is a good chance to observe the colorful flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) and other species of birds like the Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) and the Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus). The trail continues and we pass by some of the final tanks where the salt is carefully extracted from June until September.

Throughout the year you can see many birds that use this area not only as feeding habitat but also as a breeding ground and species like the Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa), Redshank (Tringa totanus), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta), Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) and the Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) are easily spotted. On our way back to the Arraial Ferreira Neto we'll explore the interesting vegetation of the marshland area which is very well adapted to the high contents of salt, the white gold of the Algarve.
