Ecotourism and Birdwatching in the Algarve: a potential alternative to local development
Nature-based tourism offers a potential alternative which could turn protected areas and their biodiversity, often perceived by local communities as a hindrance to economic development, into assets which they have an incentive to conserve.
Birdwatching and other ecotourism activities in the Algarve can combine the goals of conservation and sustainable development for communities in and around protected areas such as in the Ria Formosa Nature Park, one of the three protected areas in the South of Portugal.
