Of course, at the top of our list is the Algarve’s beaches. The region is famous for its breathtaking coastlines, golden sands, and turquoise waters. And, there are plenty of beaches to choose from — all of which you can visit for free!
Possibly the most iconic beach in the Algarve is Marinha Beach in Lagoa. Frequently ranked as one of the best beaches in Portugal, Europe, and even the world, Praia da Marinha is a must-see in the Algarve.
Another that shouldn’t be missed is Praia da Falésia. Enclosed by red cliffs, this almost 6-kilometre beach is as serene as it is expansive. In 2024, it was named the Best of the Best Beaches as part of TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards.
The options for incredible beaches are endless in the Algarve, with Praia da Rocha, Praia Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo and more waiting to welcome you.
2. Hike the Seven Hanging Valleys
Between Praia da Marinha and Praia do Vale de Centianes, the Seven Hanging Valleys trail is one of the most picturesque pathways in the Algarve. Admire the rock formations jutting from the water, or even take a peek into the incredible Benagail Cave from above!
3. Take a Free Walking Tour in Faro
The historic city of Faro is the gateway to the Algarve, as most people start their journey here as they arrive at Faro airport. With its cobblestone streets and stunning architecture, one of the best ways to experience Faro is on a free walking tour.
Join a local guide who will show you around the town while regaling you with tales of its long and intriguing heritage. At the end of the tour, you can tip your guide at your discretion based on your experience of the tour.
4. Experience Algarve’s Markets
While the Algarve’s natural abundance is one of its most attractive qualities, so is its food scene. From seafood dishes to pastries, there’s plenty of delectable bites that will please your palate. One of the best, and freest, ways of getting a taste of the culinary landscape is by visiting the local markets. A top choice is the Mercados de Olhão which showcases the diverse produce of the Algarve, from homegrown vegetables to freshly caught fish.
5. Go Birdwatching in Ria Formosa
While in Faro, you have to explore the Ria Formosa. This natural haven is like a puzzle made up of lagoons, marshes, and islands, creating a pristine and biodiverse ecosystem. It’s particularly attractive to birdlife, making it a prime spot for birdwatching in the Algarve.
One way to spot the numerous species here is by taking a walk along the Ludo Trail, which spans 8 kilometres and crosses over the lagoon.
